Anurag Kashyap was born on September 10, 1972, in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, into a Rajput family. He studied sixth grade at Hillgrange Preparatory School in Dehradun and continued his education from seventh grade at the Scindia School in Gwalior.

He initially wanted to become a scientist, so he moved to Delhi for higher studies and enrolled in a zoology course at Hansraj College, University of Delhi, graduating in 1993.

While in Delhi, he joined a street theatre group called Jana Natya Manch and participated in many street plays. That same year, friends encouraged him to attend a Vittorio De Sica retrospective at the International Film Festival of India, where he watched 55 films in ten days.

Career Details

Anurag Kashyap began his career in the film industry in the late 1990s, initially as a screenwriter. His breakthrough came with the 1998 film “Satya,” directed by Ram Gopal Varma, for which he co-wrote the screenplay. This film was critically acclaimed and established him as a talented writer.

Kashyap made his directorial debut with “Paanch,” which faced several issues with the censor board and wasn’t released until much later. However, his 2004 film “Black Friday,” based on the 1993 Bombay bombings, gained significant attention and critical acclaim despite initial censorship struggles.

He gained further recognition with “Dev.D” in 2009, a modern adaptation of the classic novel “Devdas,” known for its unique storytelling and music.
