After finishing his studies at Ninasam, Darshan worked as a projectionist before becoming an assistant cameraman to veteran cinematographer B. C. Gowrishankar. He then got his first acting opportunity in a television soap directed by S. Narayan. Narayan later offered him a supporting role in the 1997 film Mahabharatha.

Darshan’s big break in films came with “Majestic” in 2001, where he played the role of Daasa, a youth who becomes a don. In 2004, he starred in “Kalasipalya” and “Daasa.” He also acted in “Annavru,” “Shastri,” and “Ayya” in 2005.

His role in the historical movie “Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna” won him his first Karnataka State Film Award and Filmfare Award for Best Actor.

In 2013, he appeared in “Bulbul” and “Brindavana.” “Yajamana,” released in 2019, was a major box office hit, followed by the mythological movie “Kurukshetra” later that year.

Darshan was named Hemanth Kumar at birth. The name “Thoogudeepa” comes from a 1966 Kannada film where his father, Srinivas, acted and became famous, and this name stuck with him.
