Woorkeri Venkat Raman is a former Indian cricketer who also served as the coach of the India women’s national cricket team. He took on the coaching role in December 2018. In May 2021, he was replaced by Ramesh Powar as the coach of the women’s national team.

Who Is WV Raman? 

Woorkeri Venkat Raman was born on May 23, 1965, in Madras (now Chennai), India. He is a former Indian cricketer and also served as the coach for the India women’s national cricket team.

Raman played domestic cricket for Tamil Nadu, primarily as a left-handed batsman and occasionally as a left-arm spinner. He was part of the Indian team that won the 1990-91 Asia Cup.

Cricket Playing Career

Raman made his Test debut in his hometown of Chennai against the West Indies in the 1987–88 season. In that match, he was the top scorer in the second innings with 83 runs and took a wicket in the first over he bowled in Test cricket.

India won the match, largely thanks to Narendra Hirwani, who took an impressive 16 wickets (8/61 and 8/75). Raman also played in 27 One Day Internationals (ODIs) during the same period. He scored his only international century, 114 runs, in an ODI against

South Africa in the 1992–93 series, leading India to victory in a tough chase. Raman started his first-class career as a left-arm spinner but eventually became a batsman.

He was very successful in domestic cricket, scoring three double centuries, including a score of 313 against Goa in the 1988–89 Ranji Trophy season.

His total of 1,018 runs that season broke the record set by Rusi Modi in 1944–45. Raman retired from all forms of cricket in 1999 after being dropped from the Tamil Nadu Ranji team.

Cricket Coaching Career 

After retiring, Raman became a cricket coach. He was appointed as the coach for Tamil Nadu in 2006. His contract was renewed after two years, and he continued to coach the team for another two seasons.

The Tamil Nadu team, under Raman’s coaching, won the 2008–09 domestic one-day tournament. In July 2010, he became the coach of the Bengal team, replacing Roger Binny. He was Bengal’s fourth coach in four years.

In 2013, Raman was named the assistant coach of Kings XI Punjab for the sixth season of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

In 2015, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) appointed him as the batting coach at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. In December 2018, he became the head coach of the India women’s national cricket team.
